A dragline is like a giant walking shovel – using a boom arm, large buckets and rigged wires, it serves to hoist large volumes of raw material from inside a pit to the above-ground pile. While many draglines on Australian sites have been in service for a long time, Motion Australia’s Steve Hittman says that retrofitting updated drive technology can lead to improved speed and performance.

“Choosing the right power transmission components is more important than many mining operators may realise,” he says. “A good quality power transmission solution for a mining operation is one that can accommodate torque, sheer and compressive forces, vibrations, and high speeds. Ideally, it would also be failsafe, maintenance friendly, and reduce downtime on production.”
