Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Cylindrical rollers are in linear contact with the raceways. They have a high radial load capacity and are suitable for high speeds. Cylindrical Roller Bearings are available in both single and double row constructions. They are typically designed with a cage with solid inner and outer rings together with cylindrical rollers. Some cylindrical roller bearings have no ribs on either the inner or outer ring, so the rings can move axially relative to each other. These can be used as free-end bearings. Cylindrical roller bearings, in which either the inner or outer rings has two ribs and the other ring has one, are capable of taking some axial load in one direction Double-row cylindrical roller bearings have high radial rigidity and are used primarily for precision machine tools. Pressed steel or machined brass cages are generally used, but sometimes molded polyamide cages are also used. Cylindrical roller bearings are also available in sealed or split designs. In sealed bearings, the rollers are protected from contaminants, water and dust, while providing lubricant retention and contaminant exclusion. This provides lower friction and longer service life. Split bearings are intended primarily for bearing arrangements which are difficult to access, such as crank shafts, where they simplify maintenance and replacements.

Cylindrical roller bearings are available in a number of design variations:

  • Type NU: carry radial load only and can accommodate both expansion and contraction. The relative axial displacement of one ring to the other occurs with minimum friction while the bearing is rotating.

Applications:

  • Cement and coal pulverizers
  • Pumps
  • Compressors
  • Planetary gears
  • Gear boxes
  • Centrifuges
  • Mining equipment
  • Aggregate processing
  • Transmissions
  • Type N: carry radial load only and can accommodate both expansion and contraction. The relative axial displacement of one ring to the other occurs with minimum friction while the bearing is rotating. Type N bearings may be used in one or two positions for shaft support if other means of axial location are provided. The outer ring has a cylindrical bore without ribs and the inner ring incorporates two ribs.

Applications:

  • Cement making equipment such as crushers; vertical, ball and rolling mills; conveyor drives; gear reducers, spherical pillow blocks; trunnions and rotary kilns
  • Power generation equipment such as pulverisers, gearboxes and gear drives
  • Oilfield equipment such as mud pumps, draw works, swivels, block hooks, crown blocks, traveling blocks and top drives
  • Type NJ: has double-ribbed outer and single-ribbed inner rings and can support heavy radial loads, as well as light unidirectional thrust loads up to 10 percent of the radial load. The thrust load is transmitted between the diagonally opposed rib faces in a sliding rather than a rolling motion.

Applications:

  • Cement making equipment such as crushers; vertical, ball and rolling mills; conveyor drives; gear reducers, spherical pillow blocks; trunnions and rotary kilns
  • Power generation equipment such as pulverisers and gearboxes and gear drives
  • Oilfield equipment such as mud pumps, draw works, swivels, block hooks, crown blocks, traveling blocks and top drives
  • Type NF: has single-ribbed outer and double-ribbed inner rings and can support heavy radial loads, as well as light unidirectional thrust loads up to 10 percent of the radial load. The thrust load is transmitted between the diagonally opposed rib faces in a sliding rather than a rolling motion.

Applications:

  • Power generation equipment such as pulverisers, gearboxes, and gear drives
  • Oilfield equipment such as mud pumps, draw works, swivels, block hooks, crown blocks, traveling blocks and top drives
  • Type NP: has a double-ribbed inner ring and a single-ribbed outer ring with an abutting loose rib, which allows the bearing to provide axial location and to carry light thrust loads in both directions.

Applications:

  • Cement making equipment such as crushers; vertical, ball and rolling mills; conveyor drives; gear reducers, spherical pillow blocks; trunnions and rotary kilns
  • Power generation equipment such as pulverisers and gearboxes and gear drives
